The wine
In this Tuscan red, Sangiovese finds a discreet ally in Ciliegiolo: the blend contains 80% and 20% respectively. I recommend it to you for its profile, described as fresh, fruity and pleasant, and for a minimal-intervention approach that lets the wine follow its own path. The Pettirosso 2023 is also vegan.
The Pettirosso is made by Fonterenza, a small Tuscan estate run by the Padovani sisters. They planted their first vines in 1999 and today farm four hectares biodynamically. The winery favors minimal intervention: a philosophy expressed here in the use of indigenous yeasts and vinification in stainless steel tanks. The wine is presented as Vino da Tavola rather than under a more specific appellation; the available information places it in Tuscany without naming a particular commune.
For this cuvée, the grapes do not come from the estate's four hectares: Fonterenza buys them from trusted growers it works with. The vines, around 35 years old, grow on clay and schist soils and are farmed biodynamically. After destemming and pressing, the harvest ferments with its indigenous yeasts; the must stays in contact with the skins for 10 to 15 days. Aging then lasts eight to ten months, split between barrels and stainless steel tanks. Around 5,500 bottles are produced.
The tasting notes remain understated: the wine is described as fresh, fruity and enjoyable. Its position on the proposed scales follows the same direction, with moderate fruitiness, little wood influence and a light to medium body. However, no precise notes on color, perfume or aromas are provided, so I prefer not to attribute particular colors or fruits to it. The name Pettirosso refers to the red-breasted birds that frequent the vineyards. It is a cuvée presented as typical, without trying to mask its character behind an overly elaborate description.
I would serve it as an aperitif, as the suggested pairings indicate, or with red meat, the other companion recommended for this wine. Its freshness and fruity expression make it a choice to consider when you want a convivial red, without emphasis on barrel aging. For a simple table or a shared moment around a meat dish, the Pettirosso 2023 offers an accessible way to get to know Fonterenza's artisanal work. Enjoy it by taking the time to let the fruit speak, rather than waiting for a more detailed aromatic profile than the available information provides.
