The wine
In the DaDi Toscana 2022, Avignonesi blends several Tuscan grape varieties and chooses terracotta to age the wine. I like this approach, which leaves room for red fruit, spices and a fresh, lively edge without trying to mask the origin of the grape. It is an organic and vegan red, lively in its expression, to discover when you want a wine with character that remains supple and welcoming.
The Avignonesi estate is located in Montepulciano, in the heart of Tuscany, and bears the name of its original owners. In 2007, Virginie Sayers left her career in Belgium to take over this historic estate and steer its management toward organic and biodynamic viticulture. This story explains the DaDi's approach: the name refers to the land, and the wine aims to keep a readable link with its environment. It is labeled IGP Toscana, a designation that places its origin at the regional level.
Sangiovese, the region's emblematic grape, makes up 27% of the blend. It is joined by 28% Canaiolo, 25% Mammolo, 15% Alicante and 5% Ciliegiolo. The grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts, and 10% is worked as whole clusters. The wine is aged in Tuscan terracotta amphorae, shaped by local artisans. I especially appreciate this choice of vessel: it accompanies the wine without placing it under the sign of wood, and echoes the idea of terroir carried by the cuvée. The organic approach is confirmed, as is the vegan character of the wine.
In the glass, the tasting reveals an intense nose of cinnamon and star anise, joined by raspberry and blackcurrant. The palate is juicy and vibrant, with pronounced flavors of morello cherry and black cherry, then subtle floral nuances. The fruit does not overshadow the wine's energy: freshness carries the palate through to a long, delicate and slightly soft finish. Overall the impression is fluid but not effaced; the spices and cherries give it real presence. These tasting markers make it an expressive red, where ripe fruit and fresh momentum answer each other without any announced heaviness.
I would serve it with a plate of tomato pasta, roasted vegetables or herb-roasted poultry: pairings that complement its cherry notes, spicy profile and freshness without overpowering them. It also has its place at a simple meal with friends, when you take the time to let the wine open up in the glass. Serve it slightly chilled, then notice how the red fruit and spices emerge as you taste. If you're looking for an organic Tuscan red, made in amphora and blending several local varieties, the DaDi 2022 deserves a place at your table.
