The wine
In this Tuscan red, ripe fruit meets measured aging without losing freshness. Ornellaia Le Volte 2024 blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot; I recommend it to anyone looking for a supple, expressive wine, able to move from the table to a more refined dinner without excessive solemnity.
Le Volte comes from the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia estate, established in Bolgheri, in the region of Tuscany. The property was founded by Marquis Lodovico Antinori with the ambition of producing quality wines in an area then not recognized for its great reds. This history places it within the "super-Tuscan" movement, which notably combines French grape varieties and modern techniques. The wine is labeled IGT Toscana, an appellation that recalls its regional roots without confusing it with a more restricted appellation.
The 2024 vintage blend comprises 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The vines grow on varied soils, mixing clay, sand, siliceous rocks, marl and volcanic rocks. The grapes are hand-harvested, at full ripeness, then quickly transported to the cellar. Fermentation takes place separately for each parcel, in small temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. After malolactic fermentation, the wine spends ten months partly in barrels that have already been used for Ornellaia, partly in concrete tanks: an aging that accompanies the fruit without relying entirely on wood.
Its color is a bright ruby red. The nose combines ripe cherry and plum with discreet nuances of gentle spices, including vanilla from the aging. On the palate, the texture is silky and the balance rests on the meeting between fresh fruit and a fine tannic structure. The finish lingers, with a delicately spicy touch. What I mainly remember is this alliance of freshness and harmony: the wood is perceptible in the profile, but the fruit remains in the foreground. The result feels accessible without lacking depth, and it can accompany a meal rather than demanding a lengthy production.
I would serve it with a risotto or red meat, two pairings that echo its fruit and tannins without masking its freshness. For a convivial table, a dinner around a fine cut of meat or a meal where risotto takes center stage, Le Volte 2024 naturally finds its place. Serve it at the table and let it rest in the glass for a few moments so that cherry, plum and spices can express themselves. If you enjoy supple Tuscan reds, built around Bordeaux grape varieties and balanced aging, this bottle offers an accessible way to approach the style of Ornellaia.
