The wine

Grattamacco 2022, the bold blend of Bolgheri

In this Bolgheri Superiore 2022, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese make up a dry red with assertive fruit, supported by remarkable acidity and firm tannins. I'd keep it for this encounter between blackcurrant, cherry, Mediterranean herbs and minerality, with a depth that calls for time as much as for a generous table.

Bolgheri, the estate and the Super Tuscan spirit

Grattamacco is located in Bolgheri, between the foothills of the Colline Metallifere and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The region, young but already prestigious, benefits from a landscape shaped by hills and winds coming off the coast. Founded in 1977, the estate is among Bolgheri's pioneers. It was the first in the area to plant Vermentino on its wind-exposed hillsides, although its reds are today particularly associated with its name. Since 2016, Grattamacco has belonged to the ColleMassari group. This vintage is produced in the Super Tuscan style, blending 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese. It comes from organic farming.

The available information does not specify the color of the wine; the nose opens on blackcurrant and cherry, extended by balsamic accents and scents of Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, the fruit is ample and bold. Ripe plum blends with a ferrous note evoking iron, while licorice and green herbs add more complex nuances. The tannins are soft yet tightly knit, and the remarkable acidity gives the whole its lift. The long finish leaves a mineral impression. Experts give it an average score of 97/100. A aging potential of twenty years or more is indicated; to serve it now, allow at least an hour of decanting so it has time to open.

At the table, with dishes of character
