The wine
In Tuscany's Maremma, Cabernet Sauvignon has found land that was once said to be ill-suited to vines. Campo Alle Comete Oltresogno 2024 tells this story through a grape variety that gives the wine its name, a coastal terroir, and an aging process shared between wood, steel, and bottle. I recommend it if you enjoy following a winemaking story as much as the wine itself.
This red is labeled IGT Toscana and comes from Campo Alle Comete, an estate located in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, in the province of Livorno. The Tenute Capaldo group, which also owns Feudi di San Gregorio, has 26 hectares of vines there spread across three areas: to the south, toward the heights of Torre and Montepergoli; near the winery; and to the north, in the Sondraie vineyard, where the Cabernet Sauvignon used for Oltresogno grows.
The local history of this variety began in Italy in 1944. Its establishment in the Maremma seemed risky at the time: people doubted that this territory near the Tyrrhenian Sea was suited to vines. Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta helped overturn that idea, paving the way for the wines now known as the Super Tuscans. Here, the soils are described as clay-rocky, but the maritime microclimate also plays an important role. The proximity of the sea moderates temperatures in winter and summer; its surface also reflects light toward the vines, favoring the ripening of the grapes.
For the 2024 vintage, the available information describes a red wine aged six months in French oak barrels, six months in stainless steel tanks, and then six months in bottle. Vinification and maceration take place in stainless steel tanks for three weeks. The choice to keep part of the wine in steel aims to preserve the fruity notes, while the wood complements the aging. The sources, however, do not specify the color, the aromas, or the palate: I prefer not to invent a tasting profile for you. The care taken with the containers and the aging time is the most concrete reference point here.
I would serve Oltresogno 2024 with grilled meat, a braised dish, or roasted vegetables, favoring simple cooking that leaves the wine its place. These pairings are suggestions rather than a promise based on undocumented tasting notes. Open it at a meal where you take time to talk about the landscape: the Maremma, its hills, and that sea that accompanies the ripening of the Cabernet. A gentle way to approach a Tuscan red that is distinctive for its history and its place.
