What is the difference between Sovana and Roselle?

Sovana associates a small medieval village with Etruscan tombs carved into the tuff, while Roselle is visited mainly as an open-air ancient Etruscan-Roman city. In Sovana, you move from the historic center — with its cathedral and medieval buildings — to the necropolises and the vie cave, paths carved into the rock. The appeal lies as much in the tuff landscape as in the tombs, including the Tomb of Ildebranda. The trails can be uneven: bring good shoes and check the necropolis opening hours, which vary by season.

À Roselle, about 10 km north of Grosseto, you explore the remains of an ancient city: Etruscan walls, forum, Roman buildings and amphitheater. The circuit through the park is about 2 km and the full-price entrance fee is listed at 4 €. , which is more focused on urban ruins and requires walking on an exposed site; in midsummer, the heat can make the visit less pleasant.

To choose: favor Sovana if you want to combine medieval heritage, a necropolis and paths carved into the tuff; choose Roselle if you want to understand the layout of an ancient city. The two sites are about 75 to 85 km by road — allow around 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 by car depending on the route — so it's best not to treat them as two neighboring visits.

The trap is looking for a winner: these two visits don't play in the same mood. Choose according to your mood of the day — dreamy strolling or ancient urbanist's eye!
