What are the Etruscan sites to visit in Italy?

The most striking Etruscan sites to visit are Cerveteri and Tarquinia in Latium, then Vulci, Sovana and Populonia in Tuscany. At Cerveteri, the Banditaccia necropolis is explored like a city of tombs, with streets and tumuli; it covers about 1 h 30 to 2 h. At Tarquinia, Monterozzi is best known for its painted tombs, but not all are open at the same time: check the access conditions before making the detour. Both necropolises are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. From Rome, Cerveteri is about 45 km and Tarquinia nearly 90 km.

In Maremma, Vulci combines remains of the city and tombs, in a vast park: plan several hours and suitable shoes. Near Sovana, the Etruscan necropolis and the Vie Cave, paths carved into the tuff, offer a visit more focused on the landscape; access can be less convenient without a car. On the coast, the park of Baratti and Populonia brings together necropolises and remains of the only Etruscan city built by the sea; the full visit can take a whole day.

To complete your trip, go to the Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome, useful for understanding the objects and funerary rites, or to the Guarnacci Museum in Volterra. If you have to choose two stops in Tuscany, Sovana and Populonia offer quite different experiences. Opening hours, prices and tomb openings vary by season: check them before leaving.

My personal favourite is Sovana: the Vie Cave have that "secret path" feel that turns the visit into a little adventure, while Populonia plays more on the grand scenery card.
