What are the archaeological areas of Tuscany?

The main archaeological areas of Tuscany are located around Populonia, Vetulonia, Roselle, Cosa, Volterra, Chiusi and Sovana-Pitigliano : there you will mainly discover Etruscan remains, but also Roman cities and necropolises. The choice depends on what interests you: monumental tombs, ancient urban planning or open-air sites.

On the coast, the archaeological park of Baratti and Populonia brings together necropolises, quarters linked to ironworking and remains of the acropolis; plan for about 18. 2 to 3 hours, with shoes suitable for the trails. In Maremma, Vetulonia combines remains of dwellings and Etruscan tombs, while Roselle shows an ancient city where Etruscan and Roman traces mingle. Further south, Cosa, near Ansedonia, preserves the remains of a Roman city. The surroundings of Sovana and Pitigliano are known for their necropolises and their paths carved into the tuff.

Inland, also look at Volterra and Chiusi, important for their Etruscan history. Several sites are outdoors: opening hours may vary depending on the season, and some tombs may be temporarily closed. To organize a visit in the south, here is the guide to Etruscan heritage in the Maremma.

Don't try to remember everything at once: let the stones throw their riddles at you, like a wild boar following a trail without knowing where it leads.
