What can you eat in Massa Marittima?

À Massa Marittima, you will mainly eat a Maremma land-based cuisine: taste the tortelli maremmani, large fresh ravioli filled with ricotta and spinach, served with ragù or with butter and sage. Theacquacotta is a rustic soup of vegetables and bread, often with an egg and pecorino. As a main course, look for slow-cooked wild boar or its ragù with pasta; its flavor is strong, it is not the lightest choice.

You will also find charcuterie, pecorino and olive oil from the Colline Metallifere, often served on toasted bread. To accompany the meal, ask for a red 19. Monteregio di Massa Marittima DOC ; the surrounding estates produce several styles, so it is best to ask for advice depending on your dish. For dessert, cantucci and Vin Santo are a common pairing.

Local cuisine is oriented more toward products from the inland than toward fish: for a seafood meal, it is better to look toward the coast. Menus change with the seasons, and game may be more present in autumn and winter. In the trattorias of the center, ask for the dish of the day: not all specialties are offered every day, and versions vary from one establishment to another.

The trap is wanting to check everything off: choose a dish you really fancy and save a little room to stroll afterwards through the narrow streets, rather than ending up like a stuffed wild boar!
