To buy and taste Tuscan products, first look at the Mercato di Sant’Ambrogio in Florence, the Mercato Contadino of Lucca and the farmers’ market of Grosseto. In Florence, Sant’Ambrogio is open from Monday to Saturday, from 7 am to 2 pm : you will find food stalls there and, outside, fruits and vegetables. Go in the morning; on Sunday, it’s closed.
In Lucca, the Mercato Contadino is held at the Foro Boario, on Saturday from 7 am to 1 pm, and also on Wednesday in summer. About twenty producers offer local and seasonal products; it’s more suited to shopping than to a spectacular market visit. In Maremma, the market Campagna Amica of Grosseto, via Scansanese, takes place on Thursday from 8 am to 1 pm : you can find vegetables, oil, cheeses, charcuterie and wine there.
The Mercato Centrale of Florence is also worth a visit, especially for eating on site, but the food floor is more of a food hall than a farmers’ market. The ground floor, more traditional, generally opens during the day and closes earlier on Saturday; check the opening hours before going. In all these markets, prices depend on the products and the season: ask for the price per kilo before choosing, especially for cheese, oil or fruit.
