In Tuscany, you can hike in the coastal parks, ride the bike trails, go kayaking or snorkeling, and alternate with swimming. In the Maremma Parkthe trails cross pine forests, scrubland and dunes all the way to beaches that are sometimes accessible only on foot or by sea. The route of Collelungo takes about 11 km round trip : plan for water, good shoes and several hours, especially in the height of summer. For an easier outing, the cycle path between Alberese and Marina di Alberese is flat and measures about 8 to 10 km.
On the coast, you can also reach Cala Violina on foot — allow about 30 minutes from the parking lot — or explore the coves of theisland of Elba by kayak. Access to beaches and parking lots may be regulated or paid depending on the site and the season; check the conditions before setting off. For cycling, the paths of the Diaccia Botrona reserve and the trails around the lagoon ofOrbetello are gentler than the hilly roads of the hinterland. Spring and autumn are generally more pleasant for walking; in summer, set out early, as the heat and lack of shade make long hikes arduous. In the mountains, the Alpes apuanes offer more demanding routes: don't rely on distance alone, the elevation gain greatly changes the effort.
