How do you reach the telegraph summit?

Pour rejoindre Punta Telegrafo, the highest point of the Monte Argentario, drive up to convent of the Passionists, then follow the road that climbs along the ridge. It is winding. Civilian traffic stops at about 1.2 km from the summit: continue on foot along the road, allow about 20 to 25 minutes to reach the military base. Be careful, the true summit is occupied by a military installation and is not open to the public.

You can nevertheless enjoy the views from near the gate and from a small rocky outcrop near the last bend. The walk is short, but the path first descends to a col before climbing back up steeply; wear shoes with good grip and avoid very hot days. If you prefer a longer hike, the loop route starting from Porto Ercole passes below Punta Telegrafo, without reaching the base: allow about 13.9 km and 4 h to 4 h 30. To extend your discovery of the coast, you can also plan a trip around Lake Burano and Capalbio.

The name promises a conquest, but Punta Telegrafo is best savoured as a balcony: take the time to look at the coast rather than making the gate the sole goal. It is the kind of summit that reminds you that, when hiking, the panorama does not stop at the borders of the maps.
