What is the history of the Cassero of Manciano?

The Cassero of Manciano, also called Rocca Aldobrandesca, is a medieval fortification linked to the control of the village and the roads of the Maremma. The castle of Manciano is mentioned in a document from 1188 ; at that time, the Cassero would have been far more modest than the current building, probably a watchtower held by the Aldobrandeschi. In the 14the century, the fortress passes through several hands, notably those of Orvieto and the Orsini of Pitigliano.

The Sienese take Manciano in 1416 and rework the fortification; the exact date of these works varies according to accounts, often placed around 1424. The Orsini then regain control of the village, before its integration into the possessions of the Medici in the 16the siècle. Lorsque sa fonction militaire décline, le Cassero est progressivement réaffecté ; en 1772, it becomes the seat of the municipality. The tower that gives the building its silhouette today was raised in 1935, no longer to defend the town, but to serve as a belvedere. The Cassero still houses the town hall of Manciano : son apparence actuelle raconte donc plusieurs périodes, et pas seulement le Moyen Âge.

In Manciano, the Cassero charmingly blurs the categories: its walls look less like a frozen backdrop than a family album in stone, with pages added over time.
