In Maremma, the grape harvest sometimes begins as early as mid-August and can continue until October ; the most active period is often in September. The white grape varieties and early-ripening varieties are generally harvested first. The later reds, notably the Sangiovese used for Morellino di Scansano, often arrive afterwards, in September or early October.
The calendar nevertheless varies from one year to the next, sometimes by several weeks, depending on temperatures, rainfall, the grape variety and the altitude of the vines. A warm season can advance ripeness; higher-lying plots or grapes intended for certain wines may be harvested later. If you are coming to watch the teams at work, aim rather for the second half of September, but do not count on a guaranteed date: the harvest is decided plot by plot and some wineries do not offer visits during this period. Contact the estate before travelling to check the dates and book. The harvest may also be finished before you arrive, even if you travel in September.
