To pay less, aim for January, February or November, avoiding the end-of-year holidays and school vacations. This is generally the quietest period for accommodations, especially in Florence and in the other cities. The downside: short days, cool and sometimes rainy weather; in the countryside and along the Maremmacoast, some hotels, restaurants and activities may be closed.
If you want to keep the bill down without betting on winter, look instead at mars or the fin octobre, outside long weekends and holidays. You can find a better balance between prices and weather, but rates rise quickly during spring holidays and major events. For the beach in Maremma, this saving has a practical cost: outside summer, the water is cool and beach services are often reduced. Book midweek, compare car rental fees and check accommodation opening dates directly: price differences vary greatly depending on the location and type of lodging.
