What is the best time to visit the Maremma?

For most stays, aim for May-June or September : it is warm enough to enjoy the coast and the villages, without suffering as much from the heat and crowds of midsummer. In Grosseto, average temperatures are around 18 °C in May and 21 °C in September, but they vary from day to day and the inland areas can be hotter.

If you mainly want to swim, choose instead from late June to September. In May and early June, the sea is often still cool; in September, it holds the summer's warmth better. July and August are the months best suited to beach days, but also the busiest and hottest: book your accommodation early, especially in August. For hiking in the Parco della Maremma or visiting villages, the summer heat can make midday outings unpleasant, and some park trails are subject to seasonal restrictions.

April and October are better suited to sightseeing and walks than to a guaranteed beach holiday. There will be fewer crowds, but the weather can be more changeable, with a greater risk of rain in autumn; some seasonal establishments may also have reduced their opening hours. In short: September to combine swimming and sightseeing, May-June to favour walks.

In the Maremma, it is best to keep the morning for the trails and leave the afternoon to the shaded alleyways: trying to check everything off your list means risking missing out on the pleasure of wandering.
