When to visit Tuscania in Tuscany?

The best compromise for visiting Tuscania, c’est May, June or September : it is generally mild enough to explore the town center and the Etruscan sites without the summer heat. A useful clarification: Tuscania is not in Tuscany, but in Lazio, in the province of Viterbo, in the historic region of Tuscia.

In May, expect days around 22 °C on average at the high, with a few possible showers. June is drier and warmer, around 27 °C during the day. September remains pleasant, often around 25 °C, but the rain comes back more often. July and August are the hottest months, with average highs close to 30 °C : it is still visitable, but plan outings early in the morning and avoid the hottest hours, especially for the open-air necropolises. In early July, the lavender festival may also be of interest if you are in the area.

April and October work if you prefer moderate temperatures, but bring a jacket and a raincoat: rains are more frequent, especially in October. Winter is rather cool and damp, with highs close to 10 à 11 °C ; some days remain perfectly manageable, but it is not the most comfortable period for spending long stretches outdoors.

Tuscania's lovely twist is the lavender festival: it breaks the image of a trip devoted solely to old stones.
