How to visit the Orsini fortress in Sorano?

To visit the Orsini fortress of Sorano, head to the archaeological museum housed in the complex: you can see the museum rooms, then join the camminamenti sotterranei on a guided tour. Note that access to the top of the bastions is closed for safety reasons; so this is not a free tour of the entire fortress.

Opening hours change with the season. In spring 2026, the museum was generally open from 10 am to 12 pm and from 4 pm to 6 pm, with guided departures at 12 pm, 3 pm and 6 pm ; don't assume these hours apply in October. Call before coming to +39 0564 633767 to confirm the opening, the time of the underground tour and the price — I'd rather not give you a price that might be outdated. Allow about an hour on site, more if you take the time to visit the museum and the village. The fortress is located in the upper part of Sorano ; park nearby and finish on foot, as the alleys of the centre are narrow. Then, you can head to the Masso Leopoldino to see the village from above.

In Sorano, the best trap is thinking you'll just take a quick look: the village has a knack for slowing you down at every turn. Keep your camera within paw's reach, the viewpoints hold some lovely surprises.
