Bolgheri, on the Tyrrhenian coast near Livorno, is the birthplace of the «Supertuscans»: blends based on cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah (sometimes without a drop of sangiovese) that shook up the codes of Tuscan oenology in the 1970s-80s. Sassicaia, the founding estate, has since been joined by Guado al Tasso, Grattamacco, Le Macchiole and many others — some among the most expensive wines in Italy.
