Comment on noteThe wine
I invite you on a sensory journey to the heart of a lesser-known Tuscany, that of Val d'Arno di Sopra. Imagine a wine that speaks of its terroir with rare eloquence, a blend where Sangiovese reigns supreme, supported by the finesse of Merlot and the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Petrolo estate, nestled in the hills of Valdarno Superiore, is a true emblem of this region. It is here, on these blessed lands, that Torrione is born, a wine that embodies the philosophy of the house: to express the quintessence of the terroir. The 2023 vintage is the fruit of a rigorous selection, where each bunch is picked and sorted by hand, guaranteeing impeccable quality from the very start.
This wine is a harmonious blend: 80% Sangiovese, the king grape variety of Tuscany, brings its structure and liveliness, while 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon complete the picture with their roundness and complexity. Fermentation in steel tanks, followed by extended maceration, allows all the aromatic richness of the berries to be extracted. The aging of 12 to 18 months in French oak barrels gives Torrione remarkable elegance and depth, perfectly integrating the woody notes with the fruity aromas.
When I taste Torrione, its intense ruby red color first captivates my gaze. On the nose, it is an explosion of ripe red fruits – cherries, blackberries – enhanced with touches of violet, tobacco and even slight nuances of chocolate. On the palate, it reveals itself as robust, endowed with a superbly balanced tannic structure and an aromatic persistence that prolongs the pleasure until a long and satisfying finish.
This wine is an invitation to conviviality and the pleasures of the table. I warmly recommend it with intense dishes that will do it justice: a red meat roast, a stewed game dish or even aged cheeses. Torrione 2023 is more than a wine; it is an experience, a part of the Tuscan soul that you can share on special occasions, or simply to treat yourself and discover an authentic facet of this magnificent region.
