The wine
I recommend this Tuscan red for its blend of ripe fruit, flowers and spices, carried by a full, concentrated body. The Tenuta di Trinoro 2020 doesn't aim for lightness: it expresses itself with depth, and its lingering finish invites you to take your time. If you enjoy structured wines, where the fruit is accompanied by oak and spice, this vintage deserves a place at your table.
The Tenuta di Trinoro estate is located in the Val d'Orcia, in Tuscany. Andrea Franchetti founded it in the 1980s, on a 22-hectare property. The soils, which are very diverse and mainly clay-based, are also described for this cuvée as clay-limestone. The vines stretch between 450 and 600 meters above sea level. The wine is presented as IGP Rosso Toscana, an indication of style and origin that here accompanies a red produced in a French vein, according to the winery's description.
The 2020 blend combines 69% Cabernet Franc, 23% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted upon arrival at the cellar. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks for about two weeks. The wine then spends eleven months in cement tanks, followed by eight months in French oak barrels. This two-stage aging supports a profile that is both fruity and spicy, with an assertive structure. The agricultural practices are described as respectful of the natural balance, without implying any particular certification here.
The tasting notes do not specify the color of the wine; I therefore prefer not to assign a shade that would not be documented. The nose combines ripe plums and black cherries with touches of violet and lavender. On the palate, the fruit extends into a spicy register: pepper and clove add relief. The body is robust, the structure concentrated, and the finish lingers on this rich aromatic palette. The tasting references place it on the spicy, oaky and powerful side rather than light or immediate.
I would serve it with red meat or game, pairings suggested for this wine and suited to its structure. A braised dish or a roast can offer a simple setting that lets the dark fruit and spices shine, without trying to compete with them. Open the bottle at a meal where you can take the time to savor it, rather than relegating it to a mere accompaniment. If you explore Tuscan reds with a strong character, the Tenuta di Trinoro 2020 is a great opportunity to discover the work of this Val d'Orcia property.
