The wine
In this Solaia 2022, I find an ambitious expression of Tuscany, carried by a blend where Cabernet Sauvignon dominates without erasing the Sangiovese. The wine combines fruit, pronounced oak aging and a full body: a combination to consider if you enjoy structured reds, made to evolve in the cellar. Its personality rests as much on the composition of the vineyard as on long aging in French oak.
Marchesi Antinori makes this wine in Tuscany, under the IGP Toscana designation. The family house owns estates in several Italian regions and beyond; in Tuscany, its Finca Tignanello project lies at the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation. Solaia comes from a ten-hectare vineyard, planted on gentle hillsides between 350 and 400 meters of altitude. The old vines grow on soils rich in limestone and marl. Hot days and cool nights set the rhythm of their environment, while the cultivation is described as environmentally respectful.
The 2022 vintage blend brings together 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc. Each grape variety ferments separately, with indigenous yeasts and at controlled temperature; malolactic fermentation then precedes aging. The wine spends 18 months in new French oak barrels before bottling. This duration and the choice of wood give an important place to aging, although the available information does not detail particular aromas of vanilla, spices or ripe fruit: I prefer not to invent them.
For tasting, the reference points provided describe a wine of good structure, rated 7 out of 9 for body, 6 for the presence of oak and 7 for its fruity-spicy character. The producer and the vintage are not accompanied by a precise description of the color, the nose or the flavors on the palate; it is better to keep these scales as indications of style rather than substitute claimed exact notes. The concentration is highlighted, as is its aging potential: this Solaia lends itself to a thoughtful opening, or to a few years in the cellar.
I would serve it with red meat, the pairing recommended for this wine: a roasted or grilled cut will let its structure accompany the dish without drawing attention away from the blend. For a special occasion, you can also decant it before the meal, then take the time to follow its evolution in the glass. Solaia 2022 is for those who love characterful Tuscan reds and want to choose a bottle to keep rather than open in a hurry.
