Capalbio is the chicest village in Maremma: perched on its hill in south-western Tuscany, a few kilometres from the sea, it overlooks the Orbetello lagoons and Monte Argentario. Staying in an agriturismo in Capalbio means choosing a privileged base for the Etruscan coast, the wild beaches and the nature reserves of the Maremma coastline — while enjoying the calm and authenticity of an unspoilt countryside.

The Capalbio area offers a setting that is both coastal and rural, something few Italian territories can offer: within a 15-minute drive, the deserted beaches of Capalbio Scalo and Ansedonia, the Lagune di Burano nature reserve (WWF), the ruins of Cosa, a Roman archaeological site by the sea, and the Feniglia, a protected 7 km pine grove accessible on foot or by bike between sea and lagoon. The agriturismi in the area are often wine estates — Capalbio produces its own DOC, an elegant red with notes of black fruits and spices on clay soil.

Access from Rome (A12 motorway towards Grosseto) is remarkably easy — Capalbio is 1h30 from the capital. For travellers combining sea, archaeological culture and gastronomy, it is one of the best bases in coastal Maremma.
