Agritourism farms with their own wine production are the quintessence of the Tuscan experience: sleeping among the vines, tasting wine produced just a few meters from your room, meeting the winemakers and understanding the philosophy of the estate. In the Maremma, the wine terroir is rich and varied: Morellino di Scansano DOCG in the inland hills (Mediterranean Sangiovese with soft tannins and red fruit notes), Bianco di Pitigliano DOC on volcanic tuff soils, Montecucco on the Umbrian-Tuscan border, and the generic Maremma Toscana DOC appellations.
The wine agritourism farms in our selection generally offer cellar tastings by reservation, the possibility of buying the wines directly at the estate (often at prices lower than wine shops), and sometimes participation in the harvest in September-October. Some offer guided tours of the vineyards with the winemaker, dinners in the cellar with food and wine pairings, or wine appreciation courses.
To plan a cellar visit, the best times are outside the harvest period (September-October, when the estates are fully committed to the harvest). April-June and November are ideal for relaxed visits with in-depth tasting. Always ask whether visits are possible without a reservation or whether an appointment is necessary.
