In Tuscany, Riserva does not designate the same ageing period for all wines: the rules vary depending on the appellation. The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva, made with the sangiovese locally called «Brunello», may only be marketed after six years counted from the vintage, including at least two in oak barrels and six months in bottle. For Chianti DOCG Riserva, the minimum is 24 months in the cellar. It is therefore better to read the appellation and the vintage rather than deduce the style from the single word «Riserva».
South of Siena, allow about 50 minutes of driving to the hills of Montalcino, crossing the clay lands of the Crete Senesi. Further south-west, in Maremma, the vines and olive trees descend towards the coast; the sea breezes and the temperature differences between summer and autumn days and nights contribute to the ripening of the grapes. At the table, structured reds pair with red meats, game and aged pecorino. The secondary roads are winding: allow time between stops and, after a tasting, leave the wheel to someone who does not drink.
