The wine
In this Bolgheri Rosso 2023, ripe red fruit meets a subtle woody touch, while the coastal landscape of Bolgheri surfaces in the background. I keep it for its accessible balance: a structured wine with soft tannins, one that invites you to take your time without demanding a special occasion.
Tenuta Le Colonne is located in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, in an area the estate presents as particularly close to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The vines are planted on sandy and gravelly soils, at about 40 meters above sea level. The estate has belonged to Alejandro Bulgheroni since 2016. Here, vineyard management relies on organic practices and limited intervention; the Bolgheri Rosso 2023 is thus a wine made from organically farmed grapes. The grapes ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks.
The blend combines 70% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. After fermentation, the wine spends twelve months in oak barrels. In the glass, the color is not described in the available notes, so it is best to stick to the aromas and texture reported. The nose opens on ripe cherry and plum, with a subtle hint of sweet spices and an earthy nuance. On the palate, the body is medium and the structure well defined. The tannins remain soft, bringing balance rather than a severe sensation. The red fruit takes its place again, joined by vanilla and a light toasted note, attributed to aging in wood. The whole combines fruit, aromatic freshness and the presence of oak without the wood erasing the flavors of the grape.
I would serve it with a dish that can match its ripe fruit and measured structure: grilled meat, herb-roasted joint or pasta with a ragù would work well. Tuscan cooking, with its generous preparations and restrained seasonings, offers a natural setting for this wine, without the need to seek a sophisticated pairing. You can also keep it for a dinner with friends where the bottle accompanies the meal from start to finish. Open it a little before sitting down to let its aromas of cherry, plum and spices express themselves. If you are looking for a Bolgheri red that is both structured and easy to approach, this vintage deserves a place on your table.
