The wine
With Le Trame 2023, Podere Le Boncie delivers a Sangiovese red aged in wood, made from a small organic estate in the heart of Tuscany. I was drawn to its profile, described as earthy, charming and elegant, but also to a careful winemaking approach that leaves an important place for indigenous yeasts and manual work. A wine to consider if you're looking for an expression of the region rooted in its place of origin.
Podere Le Boncie is located in the hamlet of San Felice, in the southern part of Tuscany. This family estate covers three hectares and is run by Giovanna Morganti. Sangiovese grows alongside other Tuscan grape varieties, while Le Trame 2023 is made from Sangiovese and labeled IGP Toscana. The vines used for this cuvée are about fifteen years old and grow between 300 and 350 meters above sea level.
The farming is organic, and vineyard work follows the general principles of the biodynamic movement. The grapes are harvested by hand, then the best bunches are selected, destemmed and crushed. Fermentation traditionally takes place in open wooden vats, with indigenous yeasts and without any oenological additives. The wine is then aged in medium-sized wooden barrels, before spending six months in bottle. This sequence of steps reflects an artisanal approach, without it being necessary to attribute gestures or methods that the available information does not specify.
For tasting, the indications remain measured: the color is not described, and no precise aromas are given. I therefore prefer not to invent a color or a bouquet. The profile is presented as earthy, seductive and very elegant. On the scale provided, it sits at 6 out of 9 between fruity and spicy, at 4 out of 9 between young and wood-driven, and at 6 out of 9 for body. These markers suggest a red of medium to full presence, where the wood remains a measured element rather than a dominant one. They also offer some keys for choosing it without turning a brief sheet into an overly precise tasting promise.
Le Trame 2023 pairs well with game, red meats, aged cheeses and mushrooms. I can easily picture it alongside a seasonal mushroom dish or a roast meat, while aged cheeses offer another, simpler way to extend the meal. These pairings match the suggestions given for the wine, without requiring a ceremonious occasion: open it when you feel like a Tuscan Sangiovese aged in wood and a bottle tied to a small estate. If that profile appeals to you, Le Trame can accompany a generous table, letting the dishes and the wine answer each other at their own pace.
