Comment on noteThe wine
Today I invite you to discover a wine that whispers the secrets of the Maremma, that wild and generous land of Tuscany. The Morellino di Scansano from the Mantellassi estate is an unexpected encounter, an authentic expression of Sangiovese that will surprise you with its depth and finesse.
It is in the heart of the picturesque Maremma, in Scansano, in the province of Grosseto, that the Mantellassi estate brings this Morellino di Scansano DOCG to life. This appellation, less well known than its illustrious cousins, nevertheless reveals unsuspected treasures. The king grape variety here is Sangiovese, which, under the Maremma sun, develops a unique profile, supported by small proportions of other local varieties that enrich its aromatic palette.
The 2022 vintage I had the pleasure of tasting presents itself with a deep ruby red color, brilliant and inviting. On the nose, I am immediately seduced by intense aromas of ripe woodland fruits, such as blackberry and cherry, delicately enhanced by subtle spicy notes and a light veil of vanilla. This complexity is the result of fermentation in steel tanks with skin maceration, followed by aging of at least six months, including a passage in wooden barrels that brings structure without masking the freshness of the fruit. The particularity of this wine is that it has no added sulfites, an approach that underscores the purity of its expression.
On the palate, this Morellino di Scansano demonstrates a remarkable balance between a vivifying acidity and supple tannins, offering a harmonious and very pleasant tasting experience. Its structure is present but never heavy, and the finish is long, recalling the fruity and spicy notes perceived on the nose. It is a wine that will leave a lasting impression on you.
To fully appreciate it, I recommend serving it between 16 and 18°C. It will pair wonderfully with generous cuisine: think of grilled or roasted red meats, such as a fine bistecca alla fiorentina, or even more elaborate game-based dishes. Aged cheeses will also find in it an ideal companion. This Morellino di Scansano is not just a wine, it is an invitation to share a moment of conviviality and authentic pleasure, a wonderful discovery to add to your cellar.
