Comment on noteThe wine
Imagine a wine where the strength of the earth meets the elegance of time. This Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva 2021 from Colliforti is an invitation to explore the depth of a unique terroir, a promise of intense flavors and a memorable persistence.
The Colliforti estate, nestled in the heart of Tuscany, draws its uniqueness from the volcanic soils of Monte Amiata. It is here, on a southwest-facing plot at 245 meters above sea level, that the Sangiovese grapes flourish. The significant temperature variations between day and night, combined with the sea breezes of the Tyrrhenian, shape a slow and complete maturation, essential to the wine's aromatic concentration. The soil, rich in sandstone, marl and limestone clay, instills in this Montecucco a distinctive minerality, a vibrant freshness and a tannic structure of rare elegance. Manual harvesting and rigorous bunch selection are the prelude to the making of this wine, faithful to the specifications of the Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG, with at least 90% Sangiovese.
This Riserva 2021 reveals, at first glance, an intense ruby red color with garnet highlights. On the nose, I perceive a complex and enveloping bouquet: notes of ripe red fruits and jam blend refinedly with spicy scents of licorice, vanilla and soft wood. On the palate, it shows itself warm, structured and harmonious. Its pleasant freshness and marked mineral sapidity are supported by fine and perfectly integrated tannins. The finish is long and persistent, a true signature of its volcanic origin and careful aging. After a first fermentation in steel, the wine spends three months on fine lees, then matures for at least 24 months in French oak barriques, before resting for at least 12 months in the bottle, reaching a total aging of more than three years before being offered.
This Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva 2021 is a wine of great personality, produced in a limited edition of about 3,000 bottles per year. It is designed to evolve beautifully over time, offering new nuances with each tasting. I particularly recommend it with red meats, game, braised dishes or aged cheeses. It is the ideal companion for an elegant dinner, a special occasion where you wish to surprise and delight your guests with a wine that tells a story, that of an authentic Tuscan terroir and passionate craftsmanship. Let yourself be carried away by this pure expression of Sangiovese, a true gem of hidden Tuscany.
