Notre conseil
Talking about "hiking" in Sorano means first evoking the Vie Cave, those impressive corridors carved into the tuff by the Etruscans. Imagine walking through deep trenches, sometimes up to twenty meters, between mossy and damp walls. It is an almost mystical experience, especially early in the morning, when the light barely filters through. The most accessible trail often starts from Sorano towards Sovana, and a good half-day is needed to appreciate the Guided trek in the lost city of Vitozza, a complex of cave dwellings carved into the cliff. Plan on good shoes, as the ground is uneven and can be slippery, especially after rain.
Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons. In May, the hills are a brilliant green and wildflowers color the edges of the Vie Cave. In September, the air is cooler and the grape harvest atmosphere sets in, perfect for the experiences on offer such as the Etruscan hike and wine tasting in Sorano or the Historical hike and tasting at the Cantina della Luce in Sorano. Summer can be overwhelming, and some trails, such as those of Vitozza, can be muddy in winter. If you are looking for peace, rock and tuff wine, you are in the right place. Do not look for shops: they are rare and close early. On the other hand, the local flavors, such as the pici with wild boar or the'acquacotta, await you.
