Where is the Masso Leopoldino located in Sorano?

The Masso Leopoldino is located in the historic center of Sorano, in the province of Grosseto, in Tuscan Maremma. It occupies a tuff spur overlooking the village, opposite the Fortezza Orsini. To find it, head towards the Piazza del Poio : access to the Masso is via a ramp whose starting point is on the Piazza del Poggio. It is also very close to the Porta dei Merli, also called Porta di Sotto.

Once in the village, you can therefore reach it on foot by following the signs to the Masso Leopoldino; it is not outside Sorano and does not require a car trip from the center. The route goes through the village alleys and includes an uphill stretch: plan on shoes with good grip, especially if the ground is wet. At the top, you will find a fortification built on the rock and a viewpoint over the rooftops of Sorano and the Fortezza Orsini. If you arrive by car, park on the edge of the historic center, then continue on foot: the old streets are narrow and not suitable for visiting by car.

The face-off with the Fortezza Orsini gives the walk a little air of a duel of giants: in Sorano, even the rocks seem to have their say!
