À la Fortezza Orsini in Sorano, pay particular attention to the underground passages, the Renaissance defensive structure and the small archaeological museum set up in the fortress. The visit helps you understand how the central keep and the bastions protected the town; the underground galleries are explored with a guide, starting from the museum.
In the rooms, the most unusual items are the ceramics and objects found in the old wells, as well as the small room decorated with 16the century frescoes, attributed to the apartment of Niccolò IV Orsini. There you can see mythological scenes and a madrigal score painted on the wall. The museum is rather modest: the interest lies as much in the place as in the collections.
Allow aroundan hour for the museum and accessible areas, more if you take the guided tour of the underground passages. Opening hours and departure times may vary depending on the season; check them before coming, as well as access to the upper parts, which has been restricted for safety reasons. Bring a jacket for the galleries. Do not confuse it with the Palazzo Orsini of Pitigliano, which houses another museum.
