How to visit the Vie Cave of Pitigliano?

To discover the Vie Cave of Pitigliano, set off on foot from the historic centre and follow the marked trail of about 10 km, which takes nearly 3 hours of walking. The starting point is near the tourist office, Garibaldi square : the route descends towards the Porta di Sovana, crosses the via cava of Poggio Cani, then joins those of theAnnunziata, de San Giuseppe, de Fratenuti and the Madonna delle Grazie before returning to the village. You can also walk only part of it: Poggio Cani takes about 350 meters and takes about fifteen minutes, not counting the access from the centre.

Bring hiking shoes with good grip: the path bottoms are uneven, and the tufa can be slippery after rain. The enclosed passages are shaded and sometimes damp; bring water, especially in summer, and avoid the hottest hours. The full loop is a real hike, not a simple urban stroll, with climbs and road crossings. The access points may also become difficult depending on the weather: check the signs on site and give up a section if the trail is muddy or marked as closed. To enjoy the walls and the small details carved into the rock, move slowly rather than trying to do all the sunken roads in one go.

There's a little secret-passage feel to the Vie Cave: you leave the open landscape behind and, suddenly, the walls seem to close in around you. It's the kind of detour that gives Pitigliano a mysterious backdrop feel, without overdoing it.
