What is the Torciata di San Giuseppe in Pitigliano?

The Torciata di San Giuseppe, is a fire festival celebrated on the evening of March 19 à Pitigliano : torch bearers cross the valley to the historic center, then set fire to theInvernacciu, a large effigy made of canes representing winter. The blaze symbolically marks the passage to spring, and today the festival blends this popular tradition with the celebration of Saint Joseph.

The procession starts from the via cava del Gradone et rejoint la piazza Garibaldi. Some forty torciatori, dressed in hooded cloaks, carry flaming bundles; depending on the edition, a historical procession and entertainment accompany the arrival. The custom is sometimes presented as very ancient, even Etruscan, but it is better to take this origin as a traditional interpretation rather than an established fact.

If you want to attend, plan to be outside after nightfall and arrive early to find a spot: the square can fill up around the lighting. The main event takes place on the March 19thbut the times and side events change from year to year; check the local program before you go. It is not a guided tour nor a long show: the central moment is the arrival of the torches and the burning of the effigy.

The most interesting thing is to watch it as a collective ritual rather than as a spectacle with special effects: in Pitigliano, fire carries the whole story.
