Hidden Tuscany Rating
Chardonnay IGT 1986 by Folonari from the Colline di Greve in Chianti, in Panzano, aged for at least 24 months in barrels and served at 12–14 °C. Main drawback: €110.11 for 75 cl for an IGT with no mentioned distinction.
IGT Toscana appellation and Colline di Greve in Chianti (Panzano) zone named, but Chardonnay outside Tuscan grape varieties and generic IGT with no link to the described terroir.
No awards or guide mentioned; producer Folonari named, but nothing attests to its reputation. Absence of information, not a flaw.
At €110.11 for 75 cl for an undistinguished IGT Chardonnay, the price is high for what is described; the 1.5 L large format is properly converted back to 75 cl.
Specific pairings (fish, white meats, soft cheeses), detailed aromatic profile and serving temperature of 12–14 °C indicated.
Folonari named and located in Panzano, with precise winemaking: fermentation in steel, transfer to barrels, minimum 24 months of ageing then bottle refinement.

Comment on noteThe wine
Imagine for a moment a sleeping treasure, a bottle that has crossed the decades to whisper you a story. This Chardonnay La Pietra 1986 is much more than a wine; it is an encounter with time, an invitation to patience and discovery.
This singular wine was born on the fertile lands of the Colline di Greve in Chianti, more precisely in Panzano, in the heart of Tuscany. The Folonari estate, in collaboration with Tenute del Cabreo, has managed to capture the essence of this terroir to bring this IGT Chardonnay to life. It is a single grape variety, Chardonnay, that is honoured here, far from the region's usual Sangiovese, offering a different perspective on Tuscan viticulture.
The vinification of this 1986 vintage began with an initial fermentation in steel tanks, a classic step to preserve the purity of the fruit. Then, halfway through, the wine was transferred to wood, into barrels for ageing of at least 24 months. This prolonged maturation allowed the wine to develop its complexity and structure, before further refinement in the bottle. Over the years, its colour has taken on deeper hues, signs of its venerable age. On the nose, you will be able to detect evolved aromas of chamomile, dried tea, sage and aromatic herbs, complemented by mineral notes of flint, cedar and lemon. On the palate, I recommend taking the time to appreciate its balance and the residual freshness that attests to its fine preservation.
To fully appreciate this La Pietra Chardonnay 1986, serve it at a cool but not icy temperature, in order to reveal its full aromatic palette. This mature wine will find a perfect echo with flavourful dishes. I can easily imagine it accompanying a noble fish, delicately prepared white meats or even soft cheeses. It is a bottle that invites contemplation, slow and focused tasting. A true experience for lovers of aged wines, a privileged moment that you deserve to treat yourself to.
