The wine
I'm choosing this Chianti Classico for an expression of Sangiovese tied to an estate whose history spans several centuries. The 2024 vintage is made organically, then aged twelve months in wood: an approach that pairs the grape's fruit with a deliberate ageing, without erasing its Tuscan roots.
Fattoria Ormanni lies between Poggibonsi and Castellina in Chianti. The grapes for this wine come from plots located in Barberino Val d'Elsa, in the heart of the appellation. The estate's history is ancient: first owned by the Ormanni family, whom Dante mentions in the Divine Comedy, the fattoria then passed into the hands of the Scarlatti and the Medici. The Brini family became its owners in 1818. In the 1960s, the estate gave up sharecropping to devote itself to a modern operation of its vineyards and olive groves. Today, Paolo Brini manages it, with a stated attention to respecting nature.
Of the estate's 240 hectares, 68 are planted to vines, farmed organically and with ecological certification. Ormanni Chianti Classico 2024 is made from 100% Sangiovese. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks for 15 to 18 days, followed by roughly twelve months of ageing in large casks and used barriques. For tasting, the available information confirms a red wine aged in wood, but does not detail its colour or any specific aromas: I prefer not to attribute notes to you that are not documented. The style indications place fruit and spice at mid-scale, with a somewhat more pronounced presence of wood and a medium body. It can therefore be approached as a Sangiovese of measured structure, shaped by its ageing, rather than as a wine described by a list of invented aromas.
I would serve it with red meats, charcuterie or aged cheeses, pairings suggested for this Chianti Classico. Legumes also offer an interesting avenue: a bean dish or a thick soup can accompany its red character and its wood ageing without drawing attention away from the wine. It is a bottle to open around a meal, when you feel like taking the time to discover a Sangiovese from organic vines and to understand, glass after glass, the link between the estate and its territory. Let it breathe in the glass for a few moments, then taste it with a dish rather than on its own. If you are looking for a Chianti Classico rooted in a documented family history, the Ormanni 2024 deserves a place at your table.
