Comment on noteThe wine
Imagine for a moment the beating heart of Tuscany, where the hills roll beneath the sun. It is here, in Greve in Chianti, that I discovered a gem that perfectly embodies the generosity and elegance of this land: the Merlot Alta Valle della Greve IGT Piantonaia from Poggio Scalette. This wine is an invitation to gentleness, a caress for the senses that instantly transports you.
The Poggio Scalette estate, nestled in the picturesque region of Ruffoli, in Greve in Chianti, is a place where tradition and respect for the vine are key words. This Merlot, from the "Piantonaia" Vineyard, benefits from an exceptional terroir within the Alta Valle della Greve IGT. It is here that the Merlot grape fully flourishes, expressing all its richness and complexity thanks to a favorable microclimate and soils. The fermentation, lasting 12 days, takes place in steel tanks, thus preserving the purity of the fruit before meticulous aging.
Its ruby color with subtle purplish hues is a visual promise. On the nose, I first perceive aromas of ripe red fruits, such as cherry and plum, which blend harmoniously with deeper notes of black plums and blackberries. Delicate touches of sandalwood, incense, juniper berries and coriander enrich this bouquet, giving it a fascinating aromatic dimension. On the palate, this wine offers a soft attack, silky tannins and a revitalizing freshness that supports the whole. The balance is remarkable, and the persistence on the finish is a true delight. It aged for 18 months in new 225-liter barriques, followed by 6 months in bottle, which gives it this structure and depth.
This Piantonaia Merlot is a highly versatile wine. It will be the perfect companion for your convivial dinners. Imagine it alongside flavorful game, primi and secondi piatti based on meat, or even aged cheeses. Its softness and freshness also make it an excellent choice for grilled red meats or light roasts. I recommend serving it at a cool cellar temperature and, if time allows, a brief aeration in a decanter will reveal its aromas even further. It is a wine that invites sharing, simplicity and the joy of living, a true concentrate of the Tuscan soul that you must discover.
