Which villages are located near Massa Marittima?

Nearby Massa Marittima, you can discover Monterotondo Marittimo (about 11 km as the crow flies), Montieri (14 km), Gavorrano (14 km) and Scarlino (16 km). These distances are approximate: by road, the journeys are longer, as the villages are separated by hills and winding roads. Follonica, on the seashore, can be reached in about 20 minutes by car according to the local tourist office.

For a trip into the hinterland, Montieri and Monterotondo Marittimo are good choices; near the latter, the Biancane geothermal park is worth a visit, but it is located about 30 km from Massa Marittima. Scarlino makes it possible to combine the village and the coast, while Suvereto, about 18 km as the crow flies, is another option towards the province of Livorno. In practice, the car is the simplest solution for visiting these villages one after another: buses exist, but the connections can make the trips considerably longer. In the fine season, also check the access rules for Cala Violina, near Scarlino, which is regulated in summer.

I would choose a single detour rather than ticking off the villages one after another: in this corner of the world, improvised breaks often make the best memories.
