Where are the free Vie Cave of Pitigliano located?

The Free Vie Cave are located around the historic center of Pitigliano, in the valleys at the foot of the village, and you can walk through them without a ticket. To reach them, go down via the Porta di Sovana, on the piazza A. Berni, then follow the via cava of Poggio Cani. At the bottom, the paths branch off towards Fratenuti, San Giuseppe and l’Annunziata. The via cava of the Madonna delle Grazie can also be reached from the sanctuary of the same name, outside the town.

If you want to make a loop rather than visit a single passage, the marked trail starts from the center, notably passing the Annunziata, San Giuseppe, Fratenuti and Madonna delle Grazie, then goes back up via Poggio Cani: allow about 10 km and nearly 3 hours, not counting stops. Bring shoes with good grip and water: the trails can be steep or slippery, especially after rain. A small nuance about the word "free": most of the paths are freely accessible, but the via cava del Gradone is located in the open-air archaeological museum Alberto Manzi, whose entrance is paid; check its opening hours before planning your visit.

What I like about the Vie Cave is this striking contrast: you leave the facades of Pitigliano and find yourself in almost secret tufa corridors.
