Where is Maremma located?

The Maremma is located in west-central Italy, along the Tyrrhenian Sea, mainly in the south of the Tuscany, around the province of Grosseto. Notably located there is Follonica to the north, then Grosseto, Castiglione della Pescaia and Orbetello further south. It is not an administrative region with clear boundaries: depending on the definition used, the name may also refer to coastal areas in the south of the provinces of Livorno and Pisa, as well as the Latium Maremma, just to the south.

To organize a stay, when people simply talk about "the Maremma", they often mean the Tuscan part around Grosseto. The coast stretches from the Gulf of Follonica toward the border with Latium, near the mouth of the Chiarone, but the hinterland also matters: villages, hills and rural areas. So check the exact municipality before booking: two accommodations advertised as being in Maremma can be quite far apart. If you tell me where you plan to arrive or what you want to visit, I can specify the area.

Maremma is the kind of name that makes you imagine a single setting, whereas the atmosphere can change completely depending on your plans. First choose what you want to experience, then your base — a little pinch of common sense!
