The Maremma is a geographical and historical region on the coast of central Italy, not an administrative region. It extends mainly into the south of the Tuscany, around the province of Grosseto, and continues north of the Lazio. Its boundaries are not clear-cut: depending on the context, the name refers to a fairly broad area or, more commonly for a trip, the Tuscan Maremma.
We generally distinguish the Pisan Maremma, to the north, the Grosseto Maremma, in the center and south of Tuscany, and the Lazio Maremma, on the other side of the regional border. The term also evokes a landscape: plains and hills close to the sea, long marked by marshy areas, much of which has been drained. The Maremma is therefore not just a strip of beaches: its territory also extends into the hinterland.
