The Tuscan Maremma is located in southern Tuscany, along the Tyrrhenian Sea, with the province of Grosseto as the main landmark. On the coast, it stretches roughly from the area of Follonica, to the north, down to Capalbio, near the border with Lazio. The boundaries vary depending on whether you mean the tourist area or the geographic region: the latter also extends into the southern parts of the provinces of Livorno and Pisa, and continues into Lazio.
Grosseto, the main town, is about 140 km from Florence, or roughly 2 hours by car depending on the route and traffic. Maremma is not just about beaches: around Castiglione della Pescaia and of the’Orbetello, you will find the coastline and lagoons; in the hinterland, towns like Pitigliano and Sorano are farther from the sea. If you are planning a stay, check the distances between stops carefully: the region is vast and inland journeys can take longer than you might imagine when looking at a map.
