Castell'Azzara is located in southern Tuscany, in the province of Grossetoinland, between the southern slopes of the Monte Amiata and the region of tuf villages. The village is close to the border of Lazio, but remains firmly in Tuscany. Its center sits perched at about 815 meters above sea level : so expect a mountain setting, not a seaside resort of the Maremma.
To find your way around, Pitigliano is about 24 km by road and Grosseto at some 70 to 75 km, or around1 hour 30 by car depending on the route. The roads are winding and the neighboring villages are not always quick to reach despite modest distances. A bus serves the area, but departures are limited: check the schedules before counting on it, especially on Sundays. Castell'Azzara is better suited to a stop in the hinterland than to a stay organized around the coast.
