What to do in Castell’Azzara?

À Castell'Azzara, plan mainly a stroll through the village, an outing to the woods and the discovery of the mining history around Selvena: visits are done at a leisurely pace, but the village alone doesn’t fill an entire day. In the center, walk past the Torre dell’Orologio and the churches, then head to the Grotta del Sassocolato on foot: the approach from the village is about 1 km, with a climb toward the Poggio delle Forche. The cave is home to bats; access is regulated and may depend on the season, so check before you go rather than counting on a spontaneous visit.

A few kilometers away, on the side of Selvena, the ruins of Rocca Silvana overlook the old Morone mine. The Sentiero del Cinabro links the castle to the mining site; the visit can be done with a guide, to be booked through local contacts. If you prefer a forest outing, the Monte Penna nature reserve offers trails through the woods. You can also stop by the Villa Sforzesca, but check its opening times before making the detour. To see the lively village, check whether your stay coincides with the Feast of Saint Anthony Abbot ; outside the event, the atmosphere is rather quiet.

Castell’Azzara has the charm of discreet stops: the scenery doesn't try to dazzle you, but it makes you want to slow down and look around.
