What can you see in Castell'Azzara?

À Castell'Azzara, you can wander on foot through the steep alleys of the old village, see the ancient Rocca aldobrandesca and its Torre dell’Orologio, then enter the churches if they are open. The rocca, built in the 13th century, has since been altered: don't expect to visit an intact medieval castle. In the church of San Nicola, look for the 17th-century painting; the Madonna del Rosario holds paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries. Allow about an hour to stroll around the centre, more if you stop along the way.

With a car, drive on to Selvena, a few kilometres away, to reach the ruins of Rocca Silvana, a fortress of the Aldobrandeschi linked to the history of the cinnabar mines. The Villa Sforzesca, built around 1580, is also worth a visit, but check access before setting off. For a more unusual visit, the grotto of Sassocolato is reached after about 1 km on foot from the village ; access is with a caving group and only in summer, to protect the bats. If you come in January, find out about the Feast of Saint Anthony Abbot, which offers a glimpse of local traditions.

The charm of Castell'Azzara lies in this less picture-postcard Tuscany, where mining history surfaces around every old stone. Keep some slack in your schedule: this stage is best savoured without rushing.
