When to go to Tuscany to avoid the crowds?

To avoid the crowds without giving up pleasant weather, aim for April-May or the second half of September and October. The days are generally mild, but pack a jacket and expect a few showers, especially in spring and autumn. Cities like Florence and Siena stay busy all year round: set out early in the morning and favour weekdays for museums and historic centres.

The quietest period is generally from November to March, outside the holiday season. In return, it is cooler, the days are short, and some countryside accommodation, restaurants or activities may close, especially on the coast. Conversely, July and August concentrate heat and crowds; on the coast of the Maremma, beaches and accommodation are particularly in demand in August. If you want to swim, prefer June or September : there is often less of a crowd than in midsummer, with no guarantee of peace and quiet on weekends. Also avoid long public holidays and local festivals if your goal is tranquillity.

A detour to a lesser-known village can give your day a much gentler pace than rushing from one major site to another.
