In Tuscany, look towards Sovana, Sorano and Bagni San Filippo : you will find tuff villages, trails and hot springs, far from the Florence–Pisa circuit. In the south, devote a day to Sovana and Sorano, about ten kilometres from each other. In Sovana, the Etruscan tombs and the ancient paths carved into the rock require good shoes; in Sorano, the centre is steep and cobbled. Nearby, the rock-cut site of Vitozza is explored on foot, but check the condition of the trail before setting off.
For a nature break, Bagni San Filippo, on the slopes of Mount Amiata, offers pools of hot water in the forest. From the village, allow about 5 to 10 minutes of walking to reach the Fosso Bianco. The place is free to access, but parking is paid and fills up quickly on spring weekends; arrive early. Do not climb the white waterfall: swimming and climbing are forbidden there. Another option, the Maremma Park, near Alberese, to walk through the scrubland to the coast; some routes are demanding, and in summer access may be subject to special rules, sometimes with a guide. These spots are easier to visit by car: public transport there is limited.
