The five medieval villages to remember in Maremma are Pitigliano, Sorano, Sovana, Capalbio and Magliano in Toscana. The first three form the tuff villages sector: at Pitigliano, look at the houses built at the edge of the cliff; at Sorano, the sloping alleys and the Orsini fortress; at Sovana, the small historic center and the cathedral. Sovana is a hamlet of the municipality of Sorano, not a separate municipality. Their centers are close to one another and combine well by car in a single day, not to mention the archaeological sites nearby.
Further south, Capalbio keeps its ramparts and medieval gates; at Magliano in Toscana, the walls still encircle part of the village. Allow about 25 km by car between Magliano and Capalbio, depending on the route. These two stops are therefore not in the same sector as Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana: it is better to plan another day if you want to take the time to visit. The cobbled alleys and the slopes make comfortable shoes useful. Since Maremma is vast, check travel times between stops before building your program; the inland roads are sometimes slow, even when the distance seems short.
