To get to Matera, aim for the airport of Bari-Palese (BRI), the closest one, about 60 km. Direct shuttles connect the airport to Matera; the trip usually takes around 1 h 15 to 1 h 40, depending on the service and traffic. Check the schedules for your arrival day: departures don't necessarily match every landing time, and a long wait can make the transfer less convenient.
You can also rent a car in Bari; allow about 1 hour of driving, depending on the route and traffic. The train is possible, but less direct: you first have to get to Bari Centrale, then take a regional train to Matera, with a journey that can exceed 2 hours in total. The airport of Brindisi, about 150 km, can be handy if the flights are better deals, but the transfer is longer and less simple. Naples is even farther away, at nearly 300 km : I would only choose it if your trip already goes through there.
