Why is the Ildebranda tomb called so?

The tomb bears this name in homage to Ildebrando da Soana, né à Sovana and who became pope under the name of Gregory VII. When archaeologists unearthed it, they did not know who had been buried there and gave it the name of this medieval figure, considered the most illustrious person of the village. "Ildebranda" is therefore a name given after the fact, not the ancient name of the tomb.

There is a gap of several centuries: the Etruscan monument dates from the IIIe–IIe centuries before our erawhile Ildebrando lived in the XIe siècle. There is therefore no historical link between him and the burial, nor any indication that he was buried there. The tomb is located in the necropolis of Sovana, within the Città del Tufo archaeological park; its name mainly recalls the medieval history of the village, not that of its Etruscan occupant, who remains unknown.

This name almost has a little air of a false lead: it draws you toward a story, then leaves all the room to the mystery of the other. It is this contrast that makes the tomb even more intriguing.
